LunaVax Institute Nigeria

Digital Health Systems Associate (Volunteer)

Type: Volunteer, Part-Time
Location: Remote (Nigeria-based preferred; applicants elsewhere are welcome)

About LunaVax Institute Nigeria
LunaVax Institute Nigeria is a research and implementation organization advancing vaccine access through research, innovation and implementation science. We focus on addressing measles and rubella immunization gaps, particularly among zero-dose children and communities that are difficult to reach, while generating evidence to inform the adoption of new vaccine delivery tools in Nigeria.

Our Current Work
We are preparing a Phase III effectiveness-implementation study comparing a needle-free measles-rubella microarray patch with standard injection in infants and toddlers across four Nigerian states, including facility and outreach settings. A preparatory pilot is planned before the main study.

Reliable digital data collection and record management are central to this work. We plan to use CommCare for study data collection and case management while evaluating biometric verification tools to support child identity confirmation and vaccination record linkage across visits, including in offline and outreach settings. Over the longer term, we intend to transition our systems to DHIS2 as our research and programs develop.

The Role
We are seeking a Digital Health Systems Associate to help build, test and document CommCare applications and workflows for our planned studies, including workflows involving biometric verification. You will work closely with our Study Operations team to improve system usability and help prepare team members to use these tools confidently.

This is an opportunity to gain practical experience developing digital health tools for vaccine research, from early prototypes and testing to user training and implementation preparation.

Key Responsibilities

  • Help design and build CommCare applications, forms and case management workflows for study enrollment, follow-up visits and data collection
  • Support the evaluation of biometric verification workflows, including enrollment, identity confirmation, failed captures, offline use and data synchronization
  • Prepare for and support technical demonstrations with digital health and biometric technology partners
  • Test applications and workflows, troubleshoot issues, document findings and recommend improvements based on team feedback
  • Develop user guides, quick-reference materials and training resources
  • Train and support team members in using CommCare and related digital tools
  • Work with the team to build data protection principles into system design, including access controls, data minimization and separation of participant identifiers from research data
  • Maintain clear documentation of application configurations, versions, testing and changes
  • Contribute to planning for our longer-term transition to DHIS2

Requirements

  • Hands-on experience building applications in CommCare or a similar mobile data collection platform, such as ODK, KoboToolbox, SurveyCTO or REDCap
  • Understanding of form logic, data validation, case management and data exports
  • Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to explain technical concepts clearly to non-technical colleagues
  • Clear written communication and willingness to document workflows and testing
  • Ability to commit around 5 to 8 hours per week for at least six months
  • Commitment to confidentiality, responsible data handling and privacy-conscious system design

Desirable Experience

  • CommCare application development or certification
  • Experience with biometric systems or digital identity tools in health programs
  • Experience with DHIS2 or other health information systems
  • Building digital tools for research studies, immunization programs or community health workers
  • Delivering user training or supporting field teams
  • Familiarity with data protection principles for health data
  • Experience designing or testing systems for low-connectivity and offline settings

What You'll Gain

  • Hands-on experience developing digital data collection and verification workflows for a planned Phase III vaccine study
  • Exposure to biometric verification technology and digital health partners
  • Experience in application testing, workflow documentation and user training
  • The opportunity to contribute to our longer-term transition to DHIS2
  • Guidance from our Study Operations team and collaboration with colleagues across data, research and data protection
  • A portfolio of applied digital health work in a research setting
  • A certificate of service and a letter of recommendation on successful completion of your commitment
  • A flexible, fully remote role that fits around study or other work commitments

Engagement
This is a volunteer role. The time commitment is around 5 to 8 hours per week, used flexibly, for a minimum of six months. It is fully remote, with meetings scheduled in advance, and you will sign a confidentiality agreement before starting. Work will use test data during development, and no participant data will be collected until ethics and regulatory approvals are in place. As funding is secured, we intend to develop paid roles and will consider contributors to our work, although we cannot guarantee this.

LunaVax Institute Nigeria is an equal opportunity organization. We value diversity and are committed to an inclusive environment for all team members.
